GUGLIOTTA WINS MARTIN!
Martin, Monday: Frank Gugliotta driver of the QUARTER-MAX / Pirana Z Chevy Cobalt had a dream weekend.
To start, Gugliotta won the Quarter-Max Pro Stock Challenge Last Man Standing on Friday night, then Saturday took his RJ Race Cars built Cobalt to the number 1 qualifying spot in the heat of the day to set both ends of the track record 6.386 @ 220.22, taking the Jon Kaase Tuning Challenge for most quickest-consistent car in qualifying, then won the race, and moved up in the points from 5th to 3rd, now only 66 points out of first place.
“I am really excited to get this win; it was my first win with Rick and Bonnie Jones,” Gugliotta said of his car owner Rick Jones and his wife Bonnie. “It was a great race and a great weekend.”
Gugliotta defeated John Nobile in round one, then took out John Montecalvo to advance to the semi-finals. Gugliotta then won over a red-lighting Steve Spiess for a pass to the final. On the other side of the ladder, Larry O’Brien beat defending world champion Pete Berner in the first round, then Dean Goforth and Robert Patrick. But in the final, it was all Gugliotta. He had the better reaction time and quicker ET – 6.423 to 6.473.
"To win here in Martin was really special because it is like our hometown race so a lot of our friends and employees where there, and it was our first win with Frank Gugliotta driving for the team, and our engine builder Larry Morgan and sponsor Mark Whisnant from Pirana Z was there to watch it happen. If we can just keep this momentum going we could win the championship, the only problem is now we go out to the east coast where the air/track conditions are way different than what we’ve had all season and we’ll have to work hard and race smart like we've been doing to stay on top. I'm just lucky to be a part of this great team." - Rickie Jones
The next event on the $19.5 million Knoll Gas Nitro Jam Drag Racing Series is the Amalie Oil North American Nationals presented by New England Dodge Dealers, August 10-12, at New England Dragway.

Greg Anderson - NHRA Pro Stock Wins NHRA FRAM Autolite Nationals |
ANDERSON WINS NUMBER 50 AT SONOMA!
Sonoma, Sunday: Greg Anderson drove his KB Racing LLC-owned, Summit Racing Pontiac GTO straight to the winner’s circle at the 20th annual NHRA FRAM Autolite Nationals. For Anderson, it was the 50th win of his career and with the win he reached the milestone in the second fewest races of any professional driver in NHRA history.
Bob Glidden reached 50 wins in 139 races, Anderson in 189.
“It’s a great, great milestone reaching 50 wins,” said Anderson during the post race celebration. “To be in the company of drivers like Bob Glidden is awesome. This is the result of a lot of hard work on the part of a lot of people and I thank them for all that they have done to helped me achieve this goal. My hat is off to my father-in-law and everybody that has given me that big break and done so much for me in my driving career thus far.”
Last weekend at Seattle, Bob Panella, Jr. defeated Anderson. This weekend, Anderson returned the favor. In the first round, Anderson covered the Infineon track in 6.631 seconds, low elapsed time of the round. Panella followed in 6.677 seconds. That moved Anderson to the second round against Jim Yates.
Yates made it a close race when he took a three hundredth of a second advantage at the green. Anderson powered his Summit Racing Pontiac down the quarter-mile, just nipping Yates at the finish line by approximately two hundredths of a second. Anderson recorded an elapsed time of 6.629 seconds, to 6.680 seconds for Yates.
Line won the battle against Dave Connolly at the lights and on the track. Reaction time for Anderson was .040 seconds, while Connolly followed in .064 seconds. Anderson crossed the finish line in 6.642 seconds, Connolly in 6.657 seconds.
In the final round, it was a pair of identical KB Racing LLC-owned, Summit Racing Pontiac GTOs, when Anderson faced his teammate Jason Line. Entering this final round Anderson and Line have met 10 times in the final round with Anderson winning seven.
Make that eight wins for Anderson against Line. They left almost glued together, but Line started fading as the pair reached the top end of the track with Anderson taking the win light in 6.657 second. Line followed in 6.688 seconds.
“We have felt really bad and a little embarrassed since we haven’t been performing well the last few races. We sort of lost our way. Yes, we’ve been testing but we needed to find the way back and it has been a struggle. This is a big pick me up and hopefully will send KB Racing on the way in the Countdown,” concluded Anderson.
In 2007, Anderson has now won seven times in seven final rounds. Also, this makes his 10th consecutive win in the last 10 final rounds dating back to Mac Tools U.S. Nationals last year.
The three-time Pro Stock champ likes Infineon Raceway. In addition to today’s win, Anderson won here in 2004 (over Dave Connolly) and 2005 (Kurt Johnson). In 2002, he was runner-up to Larry Morgan; and in 2003, he was runner-up to Jeg Coughlin.

Jason Line - NHRA Pro Stock Runner-Up NHRA FRAM Autolite Nationals |
LINE RUNNER-UP AT SONOMA!
Sonoma, Sunday: Jason Line, driver of the KB Racing LLC, Summit Racing Equipment Pontiac GTO, finished runner-up in Pro Stock at eliminations of today’s 20th annual NHRA FRAM Autolite Nationals.
Line opened eliminations with V. Gaines in the other lane. Close would be a good way to describe their race. Gaines cut a “look at my crystal ball” light, a .005, and was away first at the green. It took all of the Infineon Raceway quarter-mile for Line to catch Gaines. At the finish line it was Line by .035 seconds, who moved to the second round against Warren Johnson (WJ).
Against WJ, the driving of Line and the power of Line’s Summit Racing Pontiac was the difference. Line gained an advantage of over four hundredths at the green light and then reached the finish line in 6.666 seconds. His margin of victory was .059 seconds. The win advanced Line to the semifinals against Allen Johnson (AJ).
In the semifinal, Line took a page from his opponent in round one – V. Gaines – when he had a reaction time of .009 seconds. Then he covered the quarter-mile distance in 6.645 second turning back AJ by .0446 seconds. The win moved Line to the final round against his teammate Greg Anderson in a battle of identical Summit Racing Equipment Pontiac GTOs.
In the final round, Line and Anderson left together at the green. But on the top end of the track Line started fading due to engine problems and Anderson took the win light. Line crossed the finish in 6.688 seconds; Anderson took the win light in 6.657 seconds.
"This gave us a little bit of momentum," said Line. "It was good, especially to win some rounds again, and anytime we can race each other in the final it's a win. It would have been good to get the win but it's not that big of a deal. We should have our two Summit Racing Pontiacs in the final every week, but it's a difficult task with the level of competition we race against, and it's just not going to happen. This was fun, though.
"There will be no resting, I can guarantee you that. We'll be working our tails off. Unfortunately, the engine expired in my car on that run so it will create a little more work for us. We'll get it done and hopefully we'll be a little stronger at Brainerd."
For Line it was his fourth final round of the year. He has one win. For his career, Line now has now been in 28 final rounds, with 13 wins.

Allen Johnson - NHRA Pro Stock Runner-Up Schuck's Auto Supply NHRA Nationals |
AJ SCORES RUNNER-UP IN SEATTLE!
Seattle, Sunday: Allen Johnson landed in his second straight NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series Pro Stock final round today, his third of the season and 12th career, at the Schuck's Auto Supply NHRA Nationals at Pacific Raceways. This time, however, he settled for a runner-up finish to Dave Connolly. En route to the final, Johnson enjoyed lane choice in every round of eliminations which were held between delays for rain sprinkles. He first dismissed Justin Humphreys with a 6.671-second lap at 206.04 mph, then Warren Johnson with a 6.670/206.39, although W.J. fouled out, and then disposed of Warren's son Kurt when Kurt also fouled out, posting a 6.666/206.42.
In the final, A.J. launched first off the line with a .019 reaction time (.000 is perfect) to Connolly's .032, but it was Line first at the stripe with a 6.649/206.20 to Johnson's losing 6.682/206.23.
"We had a great weekend and a great day," said Johnson. "It's bad to let Dave get by us in the final. We sort of handed it to him on a platter. Everybody on the team has done such an awesome job. I was lucky to have a pretty good day driving. We kept to our plan, got to second round, and the rest of it was gravy. So, yeah, any time you go to the final it's an awesome day, for Mopar and all the team.
"We started the Western Swing off pretty good. We'll go to Sonoma and see if we can't seal the deal."
As for the slippery start in the final round, "Man, NHRA has got to be more consistent," he said. "They sprayed the starting line real, real heavy right before our run, and they hadn't done it all day. And that makes these cars a little bit upset. We didn't adjust to it as good as I guess Dave's team did, but they've got to be more consistent the way they prepare the track.
"That run right there we were ready to run. We didn't change anything from the previous run, but we just blew the tires off, it shook and we gave up three hundredths (of a second) down low. They only beat us by two. That's the difference."

Allen Johnson - NHRA Pro Stock Wins Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals |
AJ WINS IN DENVER! Denver, Sunday: Allen Johnson captured his first Pro Stock victory since Seattle of 2006, the fifth of his career in 11 final rounds, and his first at Bandimere Speedway at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals today, defeating Ron Krisher.
Johnson pulled out his quickest reaction time of the event in that round, a .018 (.000 is perfect) to Krisher's .040, but he didn't need it to take the win over a car with a broken transmission. Johnson crossed the finish line in 7.132 seconds at 192.47 mph, while Krisher coasted to a 16.720/48.95.
On his path to the final round, Johnson eliminated Greg Stanfield with a 7.099/195.31, three-time Pro Stock champion Greg Anderson with a 7.102/194.80 and Warren Johnson with a 7.086/194.58.
"It's just a fairy tale weekend," said Johnson, seated beside his dad and team engine builder Roy, who had suffered a heart attack earlier this year, and has recovered fully. "I'm sure Dad will second that. For this being a Mopar event, we were the fastest car, No. 1 qualifier: everything you can do we did this weekend and it feels really good.
"We were lucky we were in the right spot at the right time," he said of Roy's attack in Phoenix. "It worked out that he's more healthy now than he was before then. So, you can tell he's smarter (because of the way the car's running.)
"That one race was a setback for him and the team. We've just come back even stronger and everybody's bound together and we tested our butts off and they put in long hours at the shop on the engines and it's just all starting to come together.
"We've been a win waiting to happen since the first of the year and just hadn't gotten a break. In the finals we got a break. We probably wounded our motor in the finals because we only ran 192 mph. Fortunately, Ron broke a transmission, so there's the break we were looking for.
"Going into the finals we knew it was going to be tough. He'd been fast all day. I had to do my job as a driver and the car and the motor had to do their jobs. Fortunately, we got by even though we didn't do our jobs. But it would've been close.
"We've won I think every year for the past three years, and maybe we're on some kind of roll now to where we can do one or two wins a year and finish in the top eight to start with and maybe even move on up to top four at the end of the year. It's just great. Any time you can do something like this is awesome.
"Every run we made here was pretty awesome here. Richie's were too. We were on our game here."
Said Roy Johnson: "I think it's just a storybook deal. Had I been writing a script, I think I would have written it just like it happened, except Richie would have been in the other lane in the final.
"I don't know if I got smarter. I'm just trying to learn to work smarter instead of harder."
As for the improved performance and how the team will match up against the dominant Summit Racing and Victor Cagnazzi cars the rest of the year: "I think we're right there with them," said Allen. "Just like Dad with the engines, Mark (Ingersoll, crew chief) is doing an awesome job with the chassis and making good runs. We still got some improvement to make, but for the most part everybody's hands are woven together and we're all just clicking."

Kenny Koretsky - NHRA Pro Stock Runner-Up NHRA O’Reilly Thunder Valley Nationals |
KORETSKY SURPRISE RUNNER-UP IN BRISTOL!
Bristol, Sunday: Kenny Koretsky, a.k.a. Captain Chaos, stunned the Pro Stock competition Sunday in the O’Reilly Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway when he literally drove the Indicom Electric/Nitro Fish Chevy Cobalt to an oh-so-close runner-up finish.
How surprising was his final-round appearance? It was the second of his 25-plus year career. The first came at Indianapolis in September 2004. And this was his 199th career race.
On a day when the hot sun made the racing surface unpredictable, Koretsky wasn’t. Starting from 15th place, he was like lightning off starting-line from his first round win over Greg Anderson to his closing-round, heartbreaking loss to Jeg Coughlin.
“This was a lot of fun,” said Koretsky, who nonetheless was disappointed at not making his first trip to the winner’s circle. He had a .013-second reaction to Coughlin’s .041 and held off Coughlin virtually all the way. The winning margin was two-thousandths of a second – 6.809 at 203.22 mph to 6.839 at 201.82).
“You know what? I’m probably the happiest loser out there Sunday because any day you can get to the final round in NHRA Pro Stock racing, you’ve done your job,” said Koretsky, of Richboro, Pa. “I was driving like crazy. I had .001, .033, .006 and .013 (second) reaction times. I was on the Tree all day long, but we just can’t catch a break.
He began the day with the .001 reaction in upsetting Anderson (6.831 at 202.06 to 6.782 at 203.95 mph) and followed with his .033 light in defeating Larry Morgan (6.807 to a traction-troubled 10.967) and the .006 in knocking out Dave Connolly (6.827 at 202.91 to 6.805 at 203.37) to set up the decider against Coughlin.
Koretsky had words of praise for his longtime crew chief Eddie Guarnaccia and the crew of Greg Hill’s Chevy Cobalt. “Eddie and the guys gave me a competitive car to drive and I was just on my game,” he said.
“We had a different race car Sunday,” added a disappointed Guarnaccia. “We made some changes and the car’s performance came around and Kenny was hitting his shift points. It has been awhile since we’ve been in this position . . . I just wish we’d gotten the job done.”
Koretsky, Guarnaccia and the gang will try to take that last full step next week when the tour moves to Denver.

Greg Anderson - NHRA Pro Stock Wins NHRA NHRA ProCare Rx SuperNationals |
ANDERSON WINS ENGLISHTOWN!
Englishtown, Sunday: Greg Anderson continues his torrid pace in the first 10 races of the 2007 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series winning the Pro Stock class at the 38th annual NHRA ProCare Rx SuperNationals over Jeg Coughlin.
This was his sixth win of the season for Anderson. He has won the last nine final rounds he’s been in extending back to the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals last season.
For the 19th time in his career Anderson “sweep the table” (qualified No. 1, won the event, and ran low elapsed time and top speed) in his KB Racing LLC-owned, Summit Racing Equipment-backed Pontiac GTO
KB Racing LLC, who fields the Summit Racing Pontiacs of both Anderson and his teammate, Jason Line, has now laid claim to the winner’s circle at the last six national events contested here at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J. Both drivers have three wins apiece here; Anderson in 2002 (over Jeg Coughlin) and 2003 (over Darrell Alderman) and 2007 (again over Coughlin), and Line in 2004-2006.
On a day that Don “The Snake” Prudhomme’s drivers Larry Dixon and Tommy Johnson, Jr. won Top Fuel and Funny Car respectively, Anderson tied Prudhomme, a drag racing icon, in wins. Both now have 49 career victories and are ranked No. 6 on the all-time leader board in NHRA national event victories.
In the opening round, Anderson was out first over Craig Hankinson, who like Anderson was a former Pro Stock crew chief before turning to driving. After Anderson had a slight wiggle near half-track, he needed all of the advantage he gained at the green light to turn back Hankinson. Anderson’s elapsed time was 6.988 seconds; while, Hankinson crossed in 6.685 seconds. The margin of victory was in favor of Anderson when his win light came on nine thousandths of a second before Hankinson hit the finish line.
That wiggle also cost Anderson lane choice in the second round against Dave Connolly. Between rounds Anderson and his crew changed the engine in his Summit Racing Pontiac after determining that there was a possible problem in the opening round.
It paid off as Anderson left first at the green and never looked back, leading Connolly from wire to wire. The three-time NHRA POWERade Pro Stock champ recorded an elapsed time of 6.636 seconds, the quickest and fastest run of the round. Anderson needed every bit of that run as Connolly ran a 6.639 at 208.49.
In the semifinals, Anderson looked over to see Jim Yates, who had turned back Anderson’s teammate, Jason Line, in the opening round. The 46-year-old Anderson, who was born in Duluth, Minn., and now lives in the Charlotte, N.C. area, didn’t leave any doubt in this match up that he had the better car today. After getting away from the starting line with a small advantage, Anderson’s Summit Racing Pontiac drove away from Yates’ GTO, tripping the finish line lights in 6.642 seconds, the quickest run of the semifinals. Yates followed in 6.709 seconds. This set up the final round with Anderson meeting Jeg Coughlin, who drives a Chevy Cobalt.
It was over at the starting line as Coughlin jumped the gun, red-lighting by seven thousandths of a second, giving the win light to Anderson. Anderson went ahead and ran the KB Racing Summit Racing Pontiac to the finish line in 6.617 seconds, the low elapsed time of eliminations.
"I really can't fathom that," Anderson said. "It's not because of me, it's all those guys I'm associated with (the team and owner) ... I'm a lucky man and I count my blessings every day. I'm going to ride this wave as long as I can."
After 10 events, Anderson leads the NHRA POWERade Pro Stock standings with 954 points, which also puts him in the lead for the first segment of the Countdown to the Championship. Teammate Line is fourth with 628 points, 326 behind his teammate. Sandwiched in between Anderson and Line is Jeg Coughlin in second with 753 points (-201) and Coughlin’s teammate Dave Connolly, with 660 points (-294), in third. Rounding out the top five is Allen Johnson in fifth with 508 points, 446 off the lead.

Jason Line - NHRA Pro Stock Runner-Up NHRA Torco Racing Fuels Route 66 Nationals |
LINE RUNNER-UP IN CHICAGO!
Chicago, Sunday: In his third final of the 2007 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series season, Jason Line drove his KB Racing LLC, Summit Racing Equipment Pro Stock Pontiac to a runner-up finish at the 10th annual NHRA Torco Racing Fuels Route 66 Nationals at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill.
In the opening round, Line, who recorded his slowest lap of the weekend – a 6.85-second elapsed time at 200.20 mph, got help when his opponent, Max Naylor, broke shortly after leaving the starting line. Line also broke, but luck was with him and he reached the finish line first.
In the second round, former NBA great Tom Hammonds’ chance to single-handedly dismantle the KB Racing LLC, Summit Racing Equipment team this event was not to be. Hammond had previously beat Line’s teammate, Greg Anderson, in the first round. After Hammonds left first at the green Line used the power plant in his Pontiac GTO to make up the distance crossing the finish line strip first and moved to semifinals against V. Gaines.
In the semifinals, Line once again used the power of his Summit Pontiac to reach the finish line ahead of Gaines. He covered the Route 66 Raceway quarter-mile in 6.661 seconds, while Gaines recorded 6.691 seconds. This moved Line to the final round against Jeg Coughlin, who had defeated Mike Edwards, Kurt Johnson, and Larry Morgan, to reach the finals.
In the final round it was all Coughlin, who had an almost perfect reaction time of .002 (.000 being perfect). In the interest of fair reporting, it should be noted that Line’s reaction time was .025, which at most races would have been good enough to win. But in this case it was Coughlin wire to wire.
Line, the reigning NHRA POWERade Pro Stock champ, recorded an elapsed time of 6.656 second, while Coughlin, who has won the POWERade championship twice, covered the 1320-foot track in 6.658 seconds. Line came up just 21 hundredth of a second short.
“We were lucky today,” said Line. “We should have been out in the opening round when we broke, but somehow (Max) Naylor had troubles too. We made some adjustments to the cars throughout the weekend but some of our calls didn’t help. It is what it is and overall my Summit Pontiac had a good weekend. Thanks to (crew chief) Rob Downing, my teammate Greg Anderson, and all the crew who worked endless to get our cars down the track each round. It’s them that got me to the finals.”
Line leaves the Torco Racing Fuels Route 66 Nationals fourth in the NHRA/POWERade Pro Stock point standings with 593 points. The remainder of the top five are: No. 1 Greg Anderson (836 points), No. 2 Jeg Coughlin (657), No. 3 Dave Connolly (607), and No. 5 Allen Johnson (454).

Greg Anderson - NHRA Pro Stock Wins NHRA O’Reilly Summer Nationals |
ANDERSON WINS IN TOPEKA!
Topeka, Sunday: Greg Anderson, driver of the KB Racing LLC Summit Racing Equipment Pro Stock Pontiac, advanced to the final round of the 19th annual NHRA O’Reilly Summer Nationals, winning the 48th final of his career over Dave Connolly, who red lighted.
Anderson, who has won the NHRA POWERade Pro Stock Championship three-times (2003-2005), is seventh on the list for leaders in NHRA national event victories (professional categories) and third among Pro Stock drivers. The only Pro Stock drivers with more wins are Warren Johnson (96 wins) and Bob Glidden (85 wins).
The most prolific Pro Stock driver since 2002, Anderson has won the last eight final rounds he’s been in extending back to last season. This was his fifth win of 2007 in the eight races contested thus far and the 14th time he’s turned back Connolly in 21 career races. In final rounds against Connolly, Anderson holds a 6-3 advantage.
“Those are amazing numbers and I don’t know how we did it,” reflected Anderson. “As I’ve said before it all comes back to the KB Racing crew and the team that (team owner) Ken Black has assembled. We’ve got a great operation both in the shop in Mooresville ( North Carolina) and on the race circuit. We’re all happy campers let me tell you. That car was an absolute rocket ship. I’m living life and having a great time doing it.”
In reaching the final round, Anderson, from Mooresville, N.C., defeated Max Naylor in the opening round of eliminations, former NBA player, Tom Hammonds in the second round, and two-time Pro Stock champion, Jeg Coughlin. Against Coughlin, Anderson set both the Heartland Park Topeka (HPT) track elapsed time record (6.682 seconds) and the track speed record (207.24 mph).
“That was a good day at the office,” Anderson said on the winner’s podium following the race. “ I so proud of (crew chief) Rob Downing, my crew, and everybody who has worked on this race car and built these engines. We showed them this weekend what we do during the week. We worked hard the last three weeks. We spent a lot of time on the test track. When you get a break you have to get at it or those guys and gals are going to get around you.
“We had two cars that we had to run in the semifinals and finals that are putting a lot of heat on us (in the points). They’ve been running great. Everybody in this class can beat you at any given time but it’s extra pressure when you run up against the Jegs car and Connolly’s car. I can’t remember the last time the two of them have red lighted against me. That’s the results of my Summit Pontiac running like it did this weekend. It was an absolute monster. I’m a lucky man. I had a great race car and I didn’t screw it up.”
