4 WORLD CHAMPIONS!!! |
Greg Anderson - NHRA Pro Stock Wins AutoClub NHRA World Finals |
ANDERSON WINS POMONA!
Greg Anderson, driver of the KB Racing LLC-owned, Summit Racing Equipment-sponsored RJ Race Cars built Pontiac GTO, finished the 2006 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series the same way he started – with a win. Anderson won the season-opening CARQUEST Winternationals and now the season-ending NHRA Auto Club Finals.
For Anderson , it was his third win at the NHRA Auto Club Finals, his fourth win of the year and 43 of his career. Additionally, it was the second time he won both the season-opening event and the season-ending finals (2004 and 2006). En route to the final round, Anderson defeated Bob Panella, Jr., Ron Krisher and Allen Johnson. In the final round, in a battle of two identically prepared KB Racing LLC / Summit Racing Equipment RJ Race Cars built Pontiac GTOs, the three-time POWERade champ defeated his teammate Jason Line, the newly-crowned 2006 POWERade Pro Stock Champion.
“It's a great confidence builder,” Anderson said of the win. “I got knocked around myself pretty good this year. Even such, Jason had a fantastic year and I had a good year, but still head-to-head he mopped me up – he used me up like a spare tire. It did a lot for me to repay some of it today. It's not going to make any difference for next year but it makes me feel better personally. It is always fun when Jason and I race each other. It's a perfect way to end the season.”
Both Anderson and Line had .005 reaction times (.000 being perfect). “The relaxed atmosphere helps with the good lights,” added Anderson. “The starting line and the lights are all in your head. No question about it. How you get your head to that point every time when there is pressure on, that's what we have to figure out. That's what separates one driver from another. We didn't do that every time this year. We let the pressure get to us – too many thoughts, too many things going through our mind. You learn from that. We need to approach the starting line each time like we did today – relaxed.”
This is Anderson 's fifth win Anderson on the Auto Club Raceway at Pomona quarter-mile, two at the season-opening event (2004 and 2006) and three at the finals (2003, 2004, and 2006).

Jason Line - NHRA Pro Stock Wins NHRA Powerade Pro Stock World Championship |
LINE WINS NHRA PRO STOCK WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP!
Third-year Pro Stock driver Jason Line in his RJ Race Cars built Pontiac GTO, captured the first NHRA POWERade world championship of the season Sunday at the ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals in Las Vegas.
After collecting the $200,000 series champion's check, Line shared the spotlight with race winners Tony Schumacher (Top Fuel), Jack Beckman (Funny Car), Richie Stevens (Pro Stock), and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle) at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
"I can't believe it," Line said. "This doesn't seem real. It's been coming but now that it's finally happened I don't even know what to say."
Line needed to earn 20 more points than teammate and three-time defending category champ Greg Anderson to clinch the crown and accomplished that in a head-to-head meeting in the semifinals. The championship is the fourth in a row for Las Vegas-based team owner Ken Black.
"It's bittersweet to clinch it against Greg," said Line, who has earned four victories in eight final rounds this season in his Summit Racing Pontiac GTO. "He's the man. He's my champion. I love the guy and to me he'll always be the man. If not for him giving me the chance to drive in the first place, I wouldn't be standing here. To keep the championship within the team is huge. There is a huge group of people responsible for what happens on the racetrack and this championship will be shared by all of us. It's a great group that Ken has put together and I'm proud to be a part of it."

Pete Berner Racing - IHRA Pro Stock Wins IHRA Torco Pro Stock World Championship |
|
BERNER WINS IHRA PRO STOCK WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP!
Call Pete Berner a visionary or whatever you want, but in December when the mechanical engineer from Crete, Ill., walks across the stage in Greensboro, NC. During the IHRA Awards Banquet, you can call him the IHRA Torco's CompetitionPlus.com Pro Stock World Champion.
Berner battled the toughest Pro Stock racers in the world for that opportunity throughout a tough season and last weekend in Rockingham realized the lifelong dream as reality. He realized the dream, yes. But he also exhaled after holding his breath for the last two months.
“This is unbelievable,” Berner said of his come-from-behind championship triumph. “My crew is as good as gold in my eyes. You've heard the cliché that many drivers say – ‘I'm just the driver and these guys do all the work…blah, blah, blah.'
“That is exactly the truth here. I feel I did a good job of driving when I had to and even when I didn't but that was only made possible by the great confidence I had in the car coming to the starting line. When we came to San Antonio we had all the odds against us in switching brands and combinations. We had determination.
“We had a team that wouldn't concede to second-place. We never lost sight of the vision we had to win the championship. We did what we had to do.
“I certainly have to thank my wife Cheryl for her love and support. It has been the most valuable tool in our success.”
Berner had long campaigned a Ford combination for the last few seasons and traded it in for a new Rick Jones built Pontiac GTO. He also sold off the Ford engine pieces and had engine builder Jon Kaase build a GM powerplant. Berner brought in clutch specialist Pat Norcia as his crewchief to join a talented crew.
“It was as seamless of a transition as we could hope for,” Berner said. “I had the feeling it would be that way. We displayed the car at the RAM Clutches display in Orlando during the PRI show and I couldn't help but look at it and think…'Man that car looks like it can win. And, it did.”
Berner entered the final event in Rockingham with a 31 point deficit separating himself from leader Tony Gillig. He knew that two round victories were needed above Gillig's finish if he hoped to remain in contention.
Gillig lost in the first round and Berner ran the table with a first round victory over Mike Corvo Jr., and Dan Sweeney in the quarters.
“I am just so happy and this week, we'll celebrate,” Berner said. “Next week, we'll be out testing. I have a feeling defending this thing will be even tougher than winning it was.”

John Montecalvo (Center Moriches, N.Y.) won for the first time since winning the Spring Nationals at Rockingham Dragway during the 2004 season. He took home the '06 World Finals Torco's CompetitionPlus.com Pro Stock Ironman when he knocked off Rob Mansfield in the final.
“It's been awhile, but this feels great,” Montecalvo said. “Rob has such a strong car and Jeff is one of the best drivers in the business. I did not have a tough road, that's for sure.”
Montecalvo won with a 6.370 in the final round against a tire-shaking Mansfield.

Pete Berner won his second Torco's CompetitionPlus.com Ironman of the season by defeating current points leader Tony Gillig in the final at Norwalk Raceway Park. Berner nosed Gillig with a 6.443 pass at 214.18 mph to top Gillig's 6.472/211.20 pass.
“We're coming along,” Berner said. “Tony is a really good racer, his dad and I are really close and Tony and I are really close. They have a really good team and you have to be prepared when you race them. We've been pretty fortunate. We have great power and have a great car here. The crew did its job and I did my job.”

Tony Gillig - ASSC Racing - IHRA Pro Stock Wins Torco Northern Nationals |
GILLIG WINS MARTIN, EXTENDS POINTS LEAD!
It was a perfect weekend for points leader Tony Gillig and the ASSC Racing Team. Gillig knocked off John Konigshofer, Frank Gugliotta, Jeff Dobbins, and John Nobile the 2004 IHRA Torco Pro Stock World Champion in the final round, to win his second national event of 2006 and put some distance between himself and his closest competitors nipping at his heals in the Torco Pro Stock points chase.
“I couldn't have written a better story,” Gillig said. “My wife and daughter are my biggest fans and they don't come to the races very often, and my mom hasn't been to a race since I started driving this car for my car owner Tim Huston. Everyone was here. If I had to pick a bigger race to win, this was it. Between that and the points chase, and everything else under the sun that goes with this whole deal, it was perfect. I couldn't have written it better if I had sat down and plotted it out on a piece of paper.”
"This RJ Race Car is just awesome, Jon Kaase horsepower, and Ram Clutches."

Jason Line - KB Racing - NHRA Pro Stock Wins Fram Autolite NHRA Nationals |
LINE CAPTURES THIRD WIN OF SEASON AT SONOMA!
With his wife Cindy and son Jack in attendance, Jason Line drove his KB Racing LLC-owned Summit Racing Equipment-backed RJ Race Cars Pontiac GTO straight to the winner's circle at the 19th annual NHRA FRAM Autolite Nationals at Infineon Raceway in the wine country of Sonoma County. It was his third win in four final rounds this year and 11th career win in 19 final rounds.
“A good Western Swing for me personally,” said Line, who entered the swing second in points and leaves in first following the Seattle and Sonoma events. “I also think it was a breakthrough for the team as a whole. My car is running great and I think we've turned the corner. Both Greg and I are driving better and the whole team is back in sync for the stretch run. I'm excited about the rest of the year.”
Line took advantage of his RJ Race Car Pontiac GTO to defeat Mark Pawuk in the opening round. It was an elapsed time of 6.671 seconds at 207.43 mph for Line; while, Pawuk recorded a pass of 6.693 seconds. The win paired Line against Tom Martino in the second round.
Martino was out first as the green light came on at the start. Once again, Line made a better run in his RJ Race Car to take the win over Martino, running a 6.663-second pass at 207.78 mph. Martino turned in a run of 6.705 seconds in a losing effort. Line moved to the semifinal round against Jim Yates.
Against Yates, Line took the advantage at the green and never looked back, leading from start to finish. Line covered the track in 6.677 seconds at 206.92 seconds. Yates' elapsed time was 6.684 seconds. Line advanced to the final round against V. Gaines.
In the first final round meeting between the pair, Line won on a hole shot over Gaines. The former Auto Club of Southern California Road to the Future Award (Rookie of the Year) winner, Jason Line, gained a .031 of a second advantage over Gaines at the start and led the entire length of the Infineon Raceway quarter-mile.
In a holeshot win, Line's elapsed time was 6.672 seconds to 6.669 seconds for Gaines.
Line, with 1,052 points, leaves Infineon Raceway as #1 with a 64 point lead over his teammate Greg Anderson and a 122-point advantage over Dave Connolly. In fourth is Jim Yates, 188 points behind Line, and Kurt Johnson sits fifth, 252 points behind the leader.

Allen Johnson - J&J Racing/Team Mopar - NHRA Pro Stock Wins Schuck's Auto Supply NHRA Nationals |
AJ WINS SEATTLE!
Allen Johnson ran a 6.767 at 204.63 in the final round at Seattle with his RJ Race Cars built J&J Racing / Team Mopar Dodge Stratus to earn his fourth career Pro Stock victory over Tom Martino, who lost traction near mid-track in his Skull Gear Pontiac GTO.
"We've had the best car for the last four races so this isn't a big surprise to me," said Johnson, who defeated Mike Edwards, Greg Stanfield and Warren Johnson in earlier rounds. "We've struggled a little with our race day tune-up and we especially stubbed our toe in Denver in the first round but that mistake really taught us what we needed to know to get down these hot, gummy racetracks. If we hadn't done that there we probably wouldn't have learned enough to do well here."
Allen Johnson qualifed third this weekend just shy of top qualifier Jason Line (also in an RJ Race Car) who increased his series points lead by three over Greg Anderson, who now trails by 25. With this win in Seattle, Allen Johnson moved from 10th to 7th place in the NHRA POWERade Points standings, and is now #1 in the King Demon Shootout Qualifying Points!
Awesome job by engine builder Roy Johnson, Crew Chief Mark Ingersoll, Mike Gott, Toby and the whole crew - good luck in Sonoma!

Jason Line - KB Racing - NHRA Pro Stock #1 Qualifier Schuck's Auto Supply NHRA Nationals |
LINE #1 FOR FOURTH TIME IN 2006
Jason Line, who took over the No. 1 position in the NHRA POWERade Pro Stock point standings last weekend in Denver, qualified his KB Racing LLC, Summit Racing Equipment, RJ Race Cars built Pontiac GTO No. 1 at the 19th annual NHRA Schuck's Auto Supply Nationals at Pacific Raceways, in Kent, Wash., near Seattle.
Lately, hot has become a way of life for racers on the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series and Friday's qualifying was no exception. With Friday's official temperature at SeaTac Airport reaching a record 97 degrees and temperature at Pacific Raceways reaching 102 degrees in the pit area, Line used the last Friday qualifying session qualifying to be hot himself, as he blazed the quarter-mile in 6.690 seconds in his Summit Pontiac.
"That felt really good in the car and I guess the scoreboard agreed," said Line after Friday's qualifying. "It was pretty stout. I'd say we got all of it out of that run. I'm really happy with this RJ Race Cars built Pontiac GTO, it is just an awesome race car.”
Although he predicted a lower run, the 6.690 second run held throughout qualifying and Line took his second consecutive No. 1, the fourth top qualifying position of 2006 and the eight of his career.
“I really thought that one of us, Greg or me, would run better than the 69 I ran last night, but nobody did. What can I say,” reflected Line on his prediction. “I thought either Greg or I would do better and Kurt Johnson came close with his pass this morning. I was wrong on the prediction. I stand corrected.
“We hurt the engine in this morning's session, otherwise I though we would have gone faster. We damaged something internally, but we haven't taken it apart yet. So we changed engines and the new one seems to be as good as the one we hurt. I still believe we have one of the best, if not the best, cars out here. I'd rather be in our position than everybody else's'.”
In tomorrow's first round, Line squares off against Max Naylor, who qualified No. 16 with a pass of 6.740 seconds at 204.98 mph (also in an RJ Race Car).

Jason Line - KB Racing - NHRA Pro Stock Wins K&N Filters SuperNationals |
|
LINE WINS ENGLISHTOWN!
Jason Line, who won this event the last two years running, added a third when he defeated Dave Connolly in the final round of Pro Stock for the NHRA K&N Filters SuperNationals this year. It was the second final round and the second win for Line and his KB Racing LLC/Summit Racing Equipment RJ Race Cars built Pro Stock Pontiac GTO in 2006.
With this win, Line now has 10 career wins in 17 final rounds. He has now defeated Connolly three times in the final round in as many meetings. Also, the KB Racing LLC Pro Stock team has won this event for five consecutive years, with Line winning the last three (2004-2006) and his teammate Greg Anderson winning in 2002 and 2003.
"This place is cool…" said Line of Old Bridge Township Raceway Park. "And the fans here are the best. We've won three times now in the last three years; I just wish we could race here every week. I think I have good mojo here. I come to Englishtown, and I just feel good about racing here. I knew I was late in the second round, but somehow I felt I was going to win. It's one of those things.
"The Summit Racing RJ Race Cars built Pontiac was awesome today. It definitely allowed us to hold service until the final and ran on a rail all afternoon. Every pass was within a hundredth and a half to two hundredths of a second of each other all day long, and on this hot racetrack, that says a lot. The track was awesome today as well - probably the best hot track I've raced on. Hats off to the crew here at Englishtown and the NHRA Safety Safari for doing a great job prepping the track.
“I got lucky the first two rounds when I wasn't very good on the tree, but in the final against Dave (Connolly) I knew I would have to be spot on perfect, and we got it done. All the guys on the Summit Racing Equipment Pontiac did a great job this weekend.
Line, whose first child Jack was born in January was happy his win occurred on Father's Day. "I called my dad this morning. He doesn't get to travel as much as he used to but I got to say hi to him on television. It was nice to be able to win this one for him and it's also my first win here as a father. I couldn't have asked for a better day - it was picture perfect,” reflected Line.
En route to the final round against Connolly, Line defeated Greg Stanfield, Rickie Smith and Allen Johnson.
Line cut his match up close against Stanfield in the opening round, but nevertheless came away with the victory, running a 6.707 second pass. Stanfield crossed the Old Bridge Township Raceway finish line in 6.749 seconds. Line's margin of victory was about three to four feet (.0118 seconds).
Against Smith in the second round of eliminations, it was another close call for Line, who this time stretched his winning margin to about six feet. Smith was first off the line, gaining an advantage of .037 of a second. From there it took the entire quarter-mile for Line to run Smith down. Line recorded an elapsed time of 6.718 seconds to 6.774 for Smith.
It continued to be close for Line in the semifinals as he defeated No. 1 qualifier Allen Johnson. This time the margin of victory was .0163 (about five feet). Line's 6.725 second pass turned back Johnson's 6.768.
As Line approached the line for the final round, the air temperature was pushing the 90 degree mark and the track temperature was hovering around 130 degrees. In the final it was Line from start to finish. Leaving .023 seconds ahead of Connolly, Line's RJ Race Cars built Summit Pontiac crossed the Old Bridge Township Raceway Park finish line in 6.729 seconds, .033 seconds ahead of Connolly's 6.739.
Line and his teammate Greg Anderson are one-two in points. Anderson leads the way with 763 points, while Line is No. 2 with 726 points.

AJ #1 FOR SECOND TIME IN '06, AT ENGLISHTOWN!
Allen Johnson scored his second number one qualifying positionfor the year this weekend at Englishtown, NJ. On Saturday's first session AJ and the team layed down a new track e.t. record of 6.645@ 207.53 with his new 2006 RJ Race Cars built Dodge Stratus, and Mopar HEMI power-plant built by his father Roy Johnson.

Pete Berner Racing - IHRA Pro Stock Wins Mopar Canadian Nationals |
BERNER WINS GRAND BEND!
Headed into this season, Torco Race Fuels Pro Stock driver Pete Berner knew there would be a period of transition from his Ford combination of the last half-decade to a General Motors program.
Let the record reflect that it took only three races for Berner to re-establish that comfort zone. Berner scored his second career IHRA eMax national event victory when he stopped Robert Patrick in the final round of the Mopar IHRA Canadian Nationals hosted by the Grand Bend Motorplex in Grand Bend, Ontario.
Berner wasn't the quickest entry in the field, but then again, he didn't need to be. “We just tried to kill them with consistency,” Berner said. “We came here knowing the track and the conditions would be really good…much better than we had last year. The air was cool which is really conducive to making these big cubic inch cars run. “We didn't try to overpower the track. We tried to qualify in the top four or five. We just nit-picked the car and worked on that tune-up. My guys did an incredible job. Pat Norcia from RAM Cluches, who is my crewchief, made the right calls along with Greg and Randy, who just worked their butts off to make the car run as well as it did. They had the car the first one in the lanes when we were called. When you have people like that, it makes it really fun to do what we do.”
While Berner wasn't looking to set the track on fire, he wasn't letting grass grow under his feet either. “Rick Jones has given us a car that works like magic,” Berner admitted. “Whenever we load it up with a lot of clutch and tire speed, it seems to be able to handle it. We loaded it up with a lot of engine. All of our engines are by Jon Kaase, who in my opinion is the best in the business.”
Berner entered eliminations as the fourth quickest with a 6.420, 216.45. He methodically worked his way through the field by taking out John Bartunek (6.410), Elijah Morton (6.421) and Jeff Dobbins (6.443). In the final round, Berner gave up .01 on the starting line but made it up at the finish with a 6.452, 216.81 to outrun Patrick's 6.478, 217.49.
With this monumental victory, Berner is already hard at work preparing for the next event in Edmonton, Alb. The engine in his Rick Jones built Pontiac GTO, appropriately nicknamed “Kong”, is being freshened and will be ready in time to test within a week. As if that's not enough preparation, Berner is having Kaase build another engine. If Kong was the winner in Grand Bend, what will the name of this new powerplant be called? “Terminator,” Berner said. “It means I will be back.” This victory moves Berner into the fourth spot in the IHRA eMax Torco Race Fuels Pro Stock point standings.

AJ #1 FOR FIRST TIME IN CAREER, AT COLUMBUS!
Allen Johnson recorded the first low qualifier award of his 11-year professional career by posting a 6.679 at 205.82 mph in his Johnson & Johnson/Mopar Dodge Stratus R/T in the final qualifying session. Johnson's run reset the day-old track E.T. mark. As the low qualifier, Johnson will receive $3,000 from King Demon Crown.
"That's the best run we've ever made in our team's history, this new RJ Race Car is just awesome" Johnson said. "We've come close to being No. 1 qualifier three different times before but never got it done. Once we were No. 1 after Round 1 in Chicago and ended up not qualifying. A c ouple other times we missed it on mile-per-hour. It's nice to finally get one."
"It's really cool to see dad [Roy Johnson] so happy. He builds the motors so it means more to him. When they told him we were No. 1 and it was official we had the tears deal. That was a brand new motor we put in before Round 4 so it looks good." Congratulations!! RJ Race Cars NHRA Pro Stock Dodge Stratus 5-20-06 |

LINE WINS BRISTOL!
The Pro Stock final at Bristol was the ninth head-to-head, final-round match-up between KB Racing teammates Line and Anderson, with Line getting his third win in the series against his mentor.
Jason Line's RJ Race Cars built Pontiac GTO sat on pole during qualifying and was the quickest car of each elimination round, running low 6.70 passes all day, including the new track et record of 6.708 set during first round eliminations. Line was a picture of Sunday consistency with an average reaction time of .035 and average et of 6.718.
Just as it was all day, Line's RJ Race Cars GTO was quicker than Anderson's Haas GTO in the final, as Jason Line took the win with a 6.716 at 205.35 versus Anderson 's 6.752 at 204.70 mph.
"I made it through a day without screwing up for once," Line said. "The truth is I owe this one to Greg really because he took this Rick Jones car [testing] and just ran it until they figured out some things that were slowing us down. I stayed back in the shop and worked on the motors and they figured out a fast setup on my car."
"It's interesting that we've had six different winners and I'm glad I'm one of them but really it stinks because we want them all to belong to this team. That's just the way we like it, but we also realize how hard this class is and we're just motivated to work even harder to get back on top."

GILLIG WINS ROCKINGHAM!
Sunday's Torco Pro Stock victory wasn't the first for Tony Gillig (Lake Bluff, Ill.), but it was his first in a very long time. Gillig had not won on the eMax Drag Racing Series circuit since 1998.
“It sure feels good to get the monkey off my back,” Gillig said. “It was about time I won one of these. The competition in Pro Stock is so tight and the field so balanced, anyone can win in any round.” Gillig took the stripe first to fellow RJ Race Cars customer
Bert Jackson - E Love Racing Team (Glen Ellen, Va.) by running a 6.499 pass at 203.28 mph. It was Jackson's first career final.
