QUARTER-MAX Racing driver Gugliotta Wins Martin, MI |
GUGLIOTTA WINS MARTIN!
Martin, Monday: Frank Gugliotta driver of the QUARTER-MAX / Pirana Z Chevy Cobalt had a dream weekend.
To start, Gugliotta won the Quarter-Max Pro Stock Challenge Last Man Standing on Friday night, then Saturday took his RJ Race Cars built Cobalt to the number 1 qualifying spot in the heat of the day to set both ends of the track record 6.386 @ 220.22, taking the Jon Kaase Tuning Challenge for most quickest-consistent car in qualifying, then won the race, and moved up in the points from 5th to 3rd, now only 66 points out of first place.
“I am really excited to get this win; it was my first win with Rick and Bonnie Jones,” Gugliotta said of his car owner Rick Jones and his wife Bonnie. “It was a great race and a great weekend.”
Gugliotta defeated John Nobile in round one, then took out John Montecalvo to advance to the semi-finals. Gugliotta then won over a red-lighting Steve Spiess for a pass to the final. On the other side of the ladder, Larry O’Brien beat defending world champion Pete Berner in the first round, then Dean Goforth and Robert Patrick. But in the final, it was all Gugliotta. He had the better reaction time and quicker ET – 6.423 to 6.473.
"To win here in Martin was really special because it is like our hometown race so a lot of our friends and employees where there, and it was our first win with Frank Gugliotta driving for the team, and our engine builder Larry Morgan and sponsor Mark Whisnant from Pirana Z was there to watch it happen. If we can just keep this momentum going we could win the championship, the only problem is now we go out to the east coast where the air/track conditions are way different than what we’ve had all season and we’ll have to work hard and race smart like we've been doing to stay on top. I'm just lucky to be a part of this great team." - Rickie Jones
The next event on the $19.5 million Knoll Gas Nitro Jam Drag Racing Series is the Amalie Oil North American Nationals presented by New England Dodge Dealers, August 10-12, at New England Dragway.

Quarter-Max Racing, Battle of Teammates |

05/11/07
Team QUARTER-MAX / PiranaZ Racing completed their second national event as a two car team at the IHRA Spring Nationals Presented by Advance Auto Parts, Rockingham, North Carolina (April 20-22). At the end of the final qualifying session Mike Corvo Jr. driving the QUARTER-MAX Chevy Cobalt was qualified in the 7 th spot with an elapsed time of 6.365 at 218.69 mph. Frank Gugliotta driving the PiranaZ Ford Mustang was qualified in the 15 th spot with an E.T. of 6.430 at 215.72 mph.
Sunday, Corvo took on his teammate, Frank Gugliotta, in first round. Mike had his best pass for the weekend against Frank, who had a hurt motor. But in second round, Mike couldn't keep the intensity and he red lighted against Robert Patrick.
Mike Corvo Jr. - "We continue to make great runs in this Quarter-Max/Strange Cobalt. The entire crew even after a month away from the race track never missed a beat. We were fourth after Friday's session and ended up seventh in a very strong field. Seventh unfortunately paired us with our Pirana Z teammate Frank Gugliotta. Frank's race motor was hurt on the dyno just before the team needed to be in Rockingham and they were forced to race with a backup."
"I felt great going into Sunday knowing we had a car capable of winning the race. It was up to me not to have a repeat of San Antonio and I knew great reaction times were the key ingredient for a successful day. Round one faired well with an .013 reaction time and an early shutoff run of 6.345 at only 215.34. Round two paired us with the current points leader and I knew it was crucial to take him out for the benefit of both Frank and I. Pulling forward I told myself not to lay back or I'd be late, as the tree fell I was red by .053. It's really disheartening to let the team down for the second race in a row. Drag racing is a sport where you have one shot to make it right. Our success is measured in thousandths of a second and we don't get a second chance on race day. I want to apologize to all the employees, the sponsors and especially all the crew for dropping the ball. With that being said we left Rockingham sixth in points and it will only take one good weekend to put us deeper into the hunt for a championship."
Frank Gugliotta - "It seems as if bad luck once again reared it's ugly head the week going into Rockingham, as we lost our one and only engine on the dyno at Larry Morgan's raceshop. However, due to the dedication of Larry Morgan and his staff at his shop, having worked on the motor into the early morning hours Friday, the motor was on it's way to the track. Thanks to Carl and Doug Kirk for some borrowed parts, and to Rick Jones' hard work and ability to never give up, we did have a motor there. We feel fortunate to have qualified with so little time. This shows that our team, even in the worst of situations, can pull together and make the best out of what we are given.
I feel confident that going into Tulsa , the PiranaZ/ QUARTER-MAX Mustang will be a top contender. As always, I want to thank Rick Jones, as well as my entire team, for working so hard that weekend to make it happen. Thanks again to PiranaZ, QUARTER-MAX, Strange Engineering, and RJ Race Cars for their continued support of myself and my team."
Owner Rick Jones says, “I would like to say that after our former engine builder for our PiranaZ Ford Mustang left us high and dry at San Antonio that Larry Morgan and his crew stepped up and said they would take care of us. After rebuilding the Ford engine for the PiranaZ mustang they had a problem with some parts failure on the dyno. Larry Morgan and all of his guys did a great job they had only one day to scramble for parts and put the motor back together so we could make the race. They are the best engine builders out there and I love them for all the hard work they have done for us. Like it says on our hood scoop ‘Morgan Rockets a name you can trust' ”The teams' next national event is the Skull Shine Sooner Nationals, Tulsa Oklahoma, May 25- 27.

QMR Confident With Two Car Team |
| 04/08/07
Team QUARTER-MAX / PiranaZ Racing completed their first national event as a two car team at the Amalie Oil Texas Nationals in San Antonio, TX (March 23-25).
After some problems with the track surface IHRA changed the race from 1/4 mile to 1/8 mile after the second round of qualifying. But this had no effect on drivers Mike Corvo Jr. or Frank Gugliotta. At the end of the final session Corvo in the QUARTER-MAX Cobalt qualified number 7 with an elapsed time of 4.170 at 172.28 mph, and Gugliotta in the PiranaZ Mustang qualified number 14 with a 4.192 at 171.18.
Sunday, Corvo took on last year's World Champion, Pete Berner in first round. Corvo's 4.127 against Berner was the second fastest of the session, but Corvo was unfortunately beat on a holeshot.
Mike Corvo Jr. - "We have the one of the best cars in the class right now. We qualified 7th, ran 3rd best in speed and won the Jon Kaase Tuning Challenge which rewards the crew for the best 4 runs in qualifying. We are consistently making nice runs and the team really has a handle on this RJ Race Cars chassis and Larry Morgan horsepower. The only downside of the weekend was I got beat first round on a holeshot. For a driver there's no worse way to lose a race. You really feel like you let the team and our sponsors down. They're the ones who work their tails off everyday to give you the best racecar you can have and in an instant you're on the trailer. All in all, I've adapted well to these mountain motor cars and I'll just have to step it up a notch. Congrats to my teammate Frank Gugliotta. He took his Pirana Z Mustang to the semis and would have been in the final if an oil leak didn't cause an aborted run. I'm excited and looking forward to Rockingham because we have such a good ca. The time off between races gives me time to evaluate my performance as a driver and it gives the team a chance to fine tune the entire program. I'm working hard every day both physically and mentally to make sure when we pull into Rockingham, we're there to win”. Gugliotta driving the PiranaZ Ford Mustang defeated Brian Gahm who red lighted in the first round. Second round he had a holeshot victory over Dan Sweeney. Frank shook the tires in the semi-finals because of an oil leak, and John Montecalvo drove around him.
Frank Gugliotta - “I would like to begin by thanking Rick, Bonnie, and Rickie Jones for giving me the opportunity to drive their Pirana Z Ford Mustang. I feel fortunate to have left San Antonio with a semi round finish, as we had several set backs. First of all the track; then we suffered some engine problems, and as a result, our performance level was down. But even with all of this, the team pulled together and made the best out of these hurdles. I feel very confident in the team as they put their hearts in this deal. I would also like to thank Pirana Z, QUARTER-MAX, RJ Race Cars, and Strange Engineering for their support. Heading into Rockingham, I am feeling very confident as we will now have Larry Morgan Rocket Power under the hood. In a short time, I have come to realize that Rick Jones will do whatever it takes to give his team the best to compete with. I also feel confident that the team combined of the Pirana Z Ford Mustang and the QUARTER-MAX Chevy Cobalt will perform well at this event”.
Owner Rick Jones says, “This was the first race for our new 2 car team. Things went pretty smooth, and everyone on the team did a good job. The Cobalt ran really well but we lost first round to Pete Berner. Hopefully we can do better at Rockingham. We had some engine problems on our Mustang but Frank drove really good and we managed a semi final finish. Larry Morgan is taking over our entire engine building duties and hopefully both cars will run great at Rockingham.” The team's next event is the IHRA Spring Nationals Presented by Advance Auto Parts at Rockingham, NC on April 20-22, 2007.

QMR Scores First Win For Chevy Cobalt |
05/20/2005
QUARTER-MAX Racing and Rick Jones scored the first win for GM's new Chevrolet Cobalt last week at the 5th Annual IHRA ACDelco Nationals in Richmond, VA.
Jones qualified his QUARTER-MAX Chassis & Racing Components Chevrolet Cobalt in the # 2 position running an exact pair of 6.471s in qualifying, both @ 216.50.
In round one of eliminations Rick Jones took on Canadian and fellow RJ Race Cars customer Larry O'Brien. The Bear's Performance Dodge Stratus put up a good fight but wasn't quite enough to take the win as his .064, 6.571 @ 213.27 fell short to Jones' 0.055, 6.510 @ 215.89.
Jones then lined up against another fellow RJ Race Cars customer "The Flying Meatball" Frank Gugliotta in round number two. It was Jones who had lane choice due to Gugliotta's 6.517 in the first round. Rick Jones's 0.046, 6.508 @ 215.89 defeated Gugliotta's 0.043, 6.529 @ 214.21, producing a margin of victory of 0.0182 seconds (approximately 6 feet) at the finish line over the Thodos Motorsports Ford Escort.
Then in the semi-finals Team Quarter-Max squared off against Robert Patrick's Purvis Ford Cobra Mustang. Patrick ran a 6.468 in the round before to earn lane choice over Jones's 6.508. Looking directly in to the setting sun, RJ left on Patrick and never looked back. It was a holeshot win for Jones as his 0.043, 6.473 @ 215.17 put Robert Patrick's 0.085, 6.452 @ 216.69 on the trailer.
For the first time it would be two Chevrolet Cobalts in the final round, and what better place than the ACDelco Nationals. As It was Rick Jones taking on fellow RJ Race Cars customer Steve Spiess for the honor of the first Cobalt win in history.
At 10:00 PM under the lights Rick Jones drove his QUARTER-MAX Chassis & Racing Components Chevrolet Cobalt to an 0.021, 6.465 @ 216.90 by the 0.050, 9.141 @ 93.26 of Steve Spiess to take the win light. We always work together as a team, and we have a lot of fun every time we come out here. We can't wait for Grand Bend." - Rick Jones
